MLX90255 Linear Optical Array for position and spectrometry sensing applications

Melexis presents the MLX90255. This linear optical array is intended for use in a wide variety of automotive and industrial applications, including: EPAS, ESP, image scanning, mark and code reading, optical character recognition (OCR) and contact imaging, edge detection and positioning and optical linear position and rotary encoding. Its high degree of flexibility enables the user to tailor the MLX90255 to specific applications by choosing his own clock speed and integration time. A light spectrum 500nm to 950nm can be measured.
The linear sensor array consists of a 128 x 1 array of photodiodes or pixels and associated amplifiers. Integration start and stop times can be set for simultaneous integration of all pixels.. Operation is simplified by internal control logic that requires only a serial input pulse and a clock signal. The pixels measure 200µm (H) by 66 µm (W) with an 8 µm spacing between them . Light energy falling on a photodiode generates photocurrent, which is integrated by the integration circuitry associated with that pixel. The amount of charge accumulated at each pixel is directly proportional to the light intensity and the integration time.
The output is nominally 125mV for no light input and 2.4V for a nominal full-scale output. The pixel gain is 15% higher at the edges than in the middle (cosine correction) in order to get a flat output when illuminating the device with a single LED light source. On top of that, the MLX90255BA meets automotive requirements (-40ºC to +125ºC).
