Melexis' breakthrough in Japan

Melexis Microelectronic Integrated Systems N.V. (EASDAQ : MLXS) today announced an important contract with one of the world's leading producers of electronic and electric products for consumer, business and industrial use. This important Japanese company has chosen to use Melexis' innovative single Chip Cooling Fan Controller.
The largest global market for Sensor IC's is the Hall IC Sensor Latch used in Brushless DC Cooling Fans, with a volume of nearly 400 million units/year. The impeller or rotor of a fan contains a 4 pole magnet. The Hall IC Latch is used to sense the magnet pole position and switch the stator winding polarity. The largest market for Brushless DC Cooling Fans is in Personal Computers, where fan failures cause expensive processor chips to fail. Creative mixed signal circuit design and High Voltage CMOS wafer technology has been used to enhance performance, improve reliability and reduce cost with a new single chip fan controller.
Cooling fans are a critical part of PC systems. Each generation of PCs provides CPUs with increased processing speed (clock frequency), which directly increases power dissipation. Cooling fans are required to control the increasing power levels, and add cost as well as reliability risks. The development of a single chip Cooling Fan Controller was focused on the three problem areas associated with conventional discrete designs. By using mixed signal building blocks, Melexis was able to improve cost, performance and reliability.
Cost reduction was maximized by eliminating all eight components normally used in a conventional fan, with a 3 pin IC. Other fan driver IC's use 4 pins, require a diode for reverse voltage protection and need capacitors on the outputs and a capacitor for ESD protection.
This Cooling Fan Controller is a standard product and can be used for all kinds of applications. (automotive and industrial) So this product has a lot of possibilities in the future.
Although Melexis can't give any guarantee, business with this Japanese leading producer should be higher than USD 3 million per year.
With this new contract Melexis strengthens its penetration in Japan.
Other Melexis ICs are currently under active consideration by several Japanese manufacturers for important automotive and industrial programs
